Season of Light

In May of 2013, I asked my good friend Kevin Short, owner of Mid South Audio (MSA) in Delaware, who had recorded many of my songs, what he thought about having the children enrolled in the MSA Recording Studio program record a Christmas song. He thought it was a great idea and suggested that I write one. So I went to work on doing so.

After a couple of weeks and a number of hours, it was complete, and I sent it to Kevin for his opinion. A few days later, he called me and said: “Joe, I absolutely love the first verse – but as the chorus!” I was disappointed, but I knew in my heart Kevin was right. So I went back to work writing the verses. When it was completed, I sent it back to Kevin, and the kids started working on the song in the MSA recording studio. Meanwhile, individuals participating in the Fellowship Health Resources Studio 35 program, which I launched in 2010, began work on an album cover. On December 3rd, the song was released, and a release party was held in Georgetown, Delaware, celebrating the children's accomplishment.  This is one of my personal favorites among all the songs I have ever written. Kevin Short is the lead vocalist on the song.

Joe is passionate about his belief that the arts can have a transformative impact when incorporated into the treatment milieu. For thirty years, he did just that, helping thousands of clients through the non-profit that he started and developed into a highly respected multi-state organization. In 2013, Joe was honored by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare at their national convention with the prestigious Impact Award for “Visionary Leadership” for conceiving of “Studio 35,” which encapsulated his approach.

Since retiring in 2014, Joe has continued writing and performing his songs at open mics all over New England.  Through the release of his song “Butterflies and Rainbows”,  he met Maia Jansson, a gifted illustrator, and decided to publish “Like A Love Song”, a collection of twenty of his favorite poems with Maia as the illustrator.  He lives with his wife in the tiny village of Snug Harbor, RI.
