The Reviews Are In!

Illustration for Waves

Since our book was published last November, we have heard from many of you what your favorite poems are and the meaning that they hold for you. We have been gratified by the response and would like to select one each week to feature on our blog. Our first review is from Ahliaz, a thoughtful and talented 10 th grader from Cranston, RI, who wrote this about the poem: “Waves”.

WAVES

Waves like my emotions

Greet me at the shore

What am I to make of them

They’re here, and then they’re gone

Beyond where my eyes can see

To disappear once more

Until the day that I return

To embrace them as before

The Gist: This poem is about emotions that come and go. It shows how even when feelings seem to disappear, they eventually return to be felt once again. Showing emotions are a natural cycle of life, just like waves.

Sensory Imagery: Sight. These lines create a image of waves pulling away from the sand into the horizon. Like watching something slowly fade away. This visual shows that emotions don’t stay forever but can disappear just like a wave receding from the shore.

Visualizing the Meaning: The illustration shows a guy standing on the beach looking out into the water. This helps clarify because it shows exactly how the waves disappear into the distance. By looking at the art in the painting, I can understand how emotions can feel big, then quickly feel like nothing. The image makes the idea of the speaker “returning” to the shore feel real because you can see him waiting for the waves to come back.
